Struggling to Lose Weight? Pay Attention to Your Gut The proportion of some gut bacteria may be connected to how much weight a person is able to lose under certain circumstances. Sponsored We all know losing weight is a constant struggle. If you thought following a strict diet was the only way to achieve your weight loss goals, there's more to it. A new study has found that apart from diets and other regimes to keep us fit and healthy, there are other factors that are involved when it comes to losing weight, particularly gut bacteria. Gut bacteria refers to friendly microorganisms that are present in your stomach which works towards maintaining a healthy gut ecosystem, aiding digestion. Huge discovery about Dads stuns scientists

Huge discovery about Dads stuns scientists Scientists have found that the average age of new fathers is getting older and older, and that may actually be a very good thing for society. A fascinating new study out of Stanford University Medical Center has found that the average age of new dads is creeping up consistently, and that may be a good thing. The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, examined how the ages of first-time fathers have changed between 1972 and 2015 in the United States, and have found out that the mean parental age has increased from 27.4 to 30.9. The findings, based on 168,000,000 births, also found that fathers who are older than 40 now make up 9 percent of first-time fathers, and nearly 1 percent of those older than 50 are first-time dads. And because people who have children at an older age tend to be more financially and emotionally stable, this could be a boon for the children themselves. In addition, older men are more likely...

Scientists discover workings of first promising Marburg virus treatment

Image
With a mortality rate of up to 88 percent, Marburg virus can rip through a community in days. In 2005, an outbreak of Marburg virus struck a pediatric ward in the country of Angola. With no treatment available, doctors struggled to help as the virus killed 329 of 374 infected patients. Now, scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have discovered the workings of the first promising treatment for Marburg virus, a pathogen with the same pandemic potential as Ebola virus. The research builds on previous studies showing that an antibody called MR191 can neutralize Marburg—though no one knew exactly how it targeted the virus. For the new study, TSRI scientists created a map of the virus' structure and revealed through high-resolution imaging how MR191 targets and neutralizes the virus. This antibody—or a strategy to elicit this antibody in patients—could finally give doctors a way to successfully treat the disease. "This is the first antibody therapeutic found th...
